Don’t bother to put the hoops up
until you have greens under them. Just lay the row cover, or better yet clear
plastic, on the ground. If you use a single nozzle flamer,
backpack or mounted on a small cart, you won’t have to take the hoops
down to flame – just walk and wave. I have both the Johnny’s seeder and
the greens harvester and don’t use either one. The seeder is VERY heavy
and awkward unless you are doing 6 rows of the same thing for quite a while. I
have trouble with sand building up between the rollers unless it is quite wet.
DH says I was tightening the axle too tight may be why even if I got the belt
to keep doing its thing the axle would stop rotating, hence no seeds. I am too
clutsy with the greens harvester to get the greens dumped into a Rubbermaid or
bucket without spilling. I have gone back to the Earthway seeder,
though it seed too thickly (may block some holes on a plate next year if I don’t’
get a Planet Jr. or Yang) and the Victorinox knife that Johnny’s sells. Beth Spaugh Farm Fresh Food Club CSA - http://rhomestead.com Garden fresh vegetables, organically

Hello, I am trying to get my production systems down for our salad mix next
spring. Below are the methods I intend to use please let me know
what you think. I am going to start the season out early with some low tunnel two
row quick hoops. -Put low tunnel hoops up to warm up the soil. -Take down low tunnel hoops to till the soil. -Put the hoops back up for sterile seed bed wait two weeks. -Take hoops down and flame weed the beds with a 4 nozzle
flame weeder (DOES Anyone know where I can get a cheaper 4 nozzle flame weeder?
or plans to build one?) -Plant salad mix verities very dense with the Jonneys
six row seeder water and cover with low tunnel quick hoops. -Move low tunnels to next plot for moisture control when salad mix
can survive outside* -Finially harverst with the jonneys
greens harvester *Note - The last two springs have been very wet and I have
not been able to get into the field for salad planting. The
inclusion of low tunnel hoops would allow me to regulate the moisture in the
soil and thus allow for more consistent supply to restaurants and markets.
