Rye is always good, you will have to till it up early cuz asparagus roots want to get in early. Not only the rows but between plants needs to be clean. As it comes up and thrives, the ferns often fall in the row, so any kind of cultivation/mowing is tough.mulch? you need tons, and you gotta walk it out there.A farmer friend recomended shirly poppy as a asparagus cover crop. Lemme know if you find a bulk seed sourse.purple passion is very big & sweet, yet will set seed, no biggy here.
Good Luck, and Perenial Perserverence, Ann Mooney, zone 7,Va.
