Had a little excitement today, if you
could call it that. Was out pulling up trellises and dripline when a swarm
of bees appeared and clustered on a large lambsquarter about 10 ft from me,
pretty cool. I gathered them up and called a local beekeeper to get them
as I'm not set up for it at the moment. The swarm was huge, weighed in at
7 lbs!. Its rather late for bee swarms and it has an uphill battle to
survive the winter around here because they missed the big spring nectar
flow but I hope they do. To get a swarm that big there must be one heck of
a hive close. And no I didn't get stung, swarms are pretty docile as a
rule but I almost never get stung anyway, they know who is afraid of them
and most strains aren't very aggressive if you handle them right, personally I
find them fascinating. The swallows were loving it of course and darting
all over the place, big dinner for them today!!
