I'm pretty disappointed in the one I bought from Growers Supply (48" long
for 4 flats). Bought it 5 years ago, used it a couple weeks and killed
everything with plastic on top (overheated). Then last spring I did some
experimenting and tracked temps (thanks to ideas from this group) so I knew
what was happening. Brought it inside to use on the table in the house and
then it wouldn't heat - with or without the thermostat.
I did use the thermostat to control an old farrowing heat mat though and I
think I had 4 flats on it.
Last year I ended up using an electric blanket in the house (just because
it's warmer in here at night) and as soon as things had germinated I moved
them to the unheated hoophouse. Out there I used a dusk to dawn timer (sold
at Christmas time) to turn on an electric blanket at dusk and had the temp
set so it'd keep the soil warm for flats on a 4x8' plywood (actually it was
exterior siding and I used a vinyl tablecloth on top of the blanket. Need
to start more this year and not sure yet what I'll do.
