At our primary market in Indianapolis the market organization swallows
all the vendor fees for their own operating expenses (but pays for space
rent and other minor expenses). This leaves us with zero dollars for
advertising, marketing, paid market master, etc.
While we don't have a formal friends of the market organization, we have
had a good deal of success with harvest dinners. Typically we get chefs
to put on the show and make the dinner, and have vendors donate products
at or below cost. Then we get the $ minus expenses from the
restaurant/chef. It could be as fancy or simple as you want, but has
proven to be a better revenue generator than asking for donations.
