The peas will grow just fine without the inoculum; however, the nitrogen nodules on the roots, formed by certain soil bacteria and the plant, will be of poor quality. In your case, having grown peas for years, there's a good chance the bacteria are now in the soil and the inoculum is not necessary.
In my case, I'm planting the peas to improve the soil, and the soil doesn't have the bacteria.
