I like this idea (below) but it is SO annoying to give the little villians tribute.  My best control is a fine, smart cat.  The Current Cat is amazing and earns her keep all the time.  She shows no interest in birds but is on the hunt for rodents continuously.  Shawnee, zone 5 with a long slow spring

The best bet I have found with ground squirrels, baring plenty of time to sit around and shoot them, is to give them an alternative food source.  When I plant corn or direct seed squash, I make piles of corn / sunflower seeds to distract the squinnies.   I have to add more to the piles until germination or if it rains, but it does seem to keep them away from the planted stuff.

No, we have not. They have been a headache for us for a long time. They are very resilient animals and they love cucurbit seeds.
