Actually, I read the ...3'...reference with a sense of admiration and wonder. Wow, I thought...there's a person out there who can out-mulch even me.... I always mulch very heavy because a downpour can compact a thick but fluffy organic mulch. (except a fresh, green mulch...I generally do 3-4 inches because of decomposition heating....as in grass clippings.) Plus, my example to students is: think of a forest floor which annually accumulates an amazing amount of organic mulch and yet, the healthy soil ecosystem consumes it constantly; the soil level remains the same. I am glad that you pointed out the use of cardboard boxes...they work incredibly well. I also like paper poultry feed bags under an organic mulch. Shawnee, a mulching fanatic who smiles as the Round-up people worry about weed resistance. > Date: Sat, 19 Apr 2008 12:34:19 -0700 > From: sora AT coldreams.com > To: market-farming AT lists.ibiblio.org > Subject: Re: [Market-farming] oops > > > For the last 5 years, I've > > been mulching with cardboard boxes spread flat with 3' straw on top. > > OOps sorry this should have read 3 inches not feet.... > > The boxes biodegrade completely in a year, work great for weed suppression, > > and help hold in the moisture.
