Actually, I read the ...3'...reference with a sense of admiration and wonder.  Wow, I thought...there's a person out there who can out-mulch even me....    I always mulch very heavy because a downpour can compact a thick but fluffy organic mulch.  (except a fresh, green mulch...I generally do 3-4 inches because of decomposition heating....as in grass clippings.)  Plus, my example to students is: think of a forest floor which annually accumulates an amazing amount of organic mulch and yet, the healthy soil ecosystem consumes it constantly; the soil level remains the same.   I am glad that you pointed out the use of cardboard boxes...they work incredibly well.  I also like paper poultry feed bags under an organic mulch.
