Since cotton burrs have a carbon to nitrogen ration of 22:1, will the nitrogen in the soil be tied up if the burrs are just tilled into the soil instead of composting first?  It sure would be easier to spread some burrs and till them in.

Here are my options as I seem them - spread 4" of burrs on top and leave them as a mulch; spread 4" of burrs on top and till them in; or compost first then spread and till the compost in?  What do you all think?  Is there anything out there that discusses the carbon/nitrogen ratio and tying up soil nitrogen?

Thanks
