What about starting plants in cold frames? Can you start them as early as under lights?

A lesson I learned the hard way is that you do not want brassica starts to freeze when they are young. Even though they can survive repeated freezings, freezing really reduces the quality of the adult plant. Brocolli and cauliflower may have extemely small heads or bolt early.

I'm thinking of trying the cable heated cold frames this year. I think they can prevent freezing a few inches above ground level and I think growth can be promoted if the soil is kept warmer.

Otherwise, I'd start my plants indoors.

Where you are, though ,means everything.

I'm in WV, zone 7
