Allan, Sorry about your troubles. No one needs extra problems. My husband has been a "paid on call" (formerly known as volunteer) firefighter for 33 years; he's been the township fire chief for 28. In our area this personnel handles all medical and other emergency calls in addition to fire. Allow me to offer some incite to the way things are handled at an accident scene. Since emergency responders never know exactly all that has transpired at a scene, or what they will find upon arrival (intoxicated and belligerent driver, meth lab in the trunk), efforts are made to protect any victims, as well as all emergency personnel, from injury. Bodily injury is primary of course, but efforts are often made to minimize additional property damage as well. Every department has a set of standard operating procedures and those procedures are followed to keep everyone as safe as possible. There is someone in charge of the scene, referred to as incident command. Orders and directions flow from that point. When there are emergency personnel on a scene, especially at night, it is a challenge to keep track of everyone. It would be very unusual for any bystander to be welcomed onto the site. There is more than enough to do without having to deal with any non-emergency personnel, whether it happens to be the property owner or someone else. Even after the victims have received treatment and been transported, the scene can still be dangerous to anyone not part of the response team. The team of emergency personnel is responsible for and held accountable for a great deal, so they are going to control as many variables as possible. A lot of information is gathered prior to the leaving the scene and it is important that the information is accurate. In our case, that information is filed with the State of Michigan. Insurance companies also use the information that is gathered at the scene. Perhaps you could have been handled with more diplomacy, but I assure you that is wasn't in any way personal. Most of these emergency response people have had the opportunity to deal with some real bone-heads. You just can't believe how incredibly stupid people can be! As a result, they don't mince too many words or worry excessively about being abrupt. Michigan happens to be a no fault state, which means the "at fault" drivers insurance pays. You can expect to have insurance adjusters visit the scene to gather information and take photos. If it makes you feel better, take some photos yourself. You'll be less likely to feel cheated that way. Check out how your state handles cases when the motorist is uninsured. Your property policy may offer you protection in such a situation. Good luck and I hope everything comes back to normal ASAP. The insurance people did call within 5 days. We were contacted by the insurance folks in a timely matter and they sent out a claims assessor and soon we had a check for the damage including damage to the sod Lucy goodman cjmaness AT juno.com wrote:Take pictures of the damage, and pray that who ever wrecked you fence has insurance. Odds are, their insurance company won't pay up before your cattle arrive. Good luck.
