Hi, Folks! They are some very interesting heirloom
sweet potatoes, some of which are adapted to northern areas. It’s very
easy to make all the slips you need by sticking some vine in water and letting
it root. If you can grab the Seed Savers Exchange Yearbook, you can probably
work out a private deal from someone that is close to you. Warning –
many of the more northern-adapted sweet potatoes AREN’T orange –
there are some very productive purple or beige colored ones, especially from Unfortunately, the deer LOVE all sweet
potatoes. If you do them under row cover, you can probably put them out in May,
but you’re going to need deer fencing or the blood meal thing if you don’t
want to row cover – although in my experience, sweet potatoes can’t
get too hot in the North and really, really enjoy being under row cover. If you want to save a variety, you can cut
a bunch of vines (6 inches or longer) and overwinter them by putting the ends
in a vase of water and putting the vase in the sun. Then, you just cut
whatever lengths you need, root them in water and plant. Dorene Pasekoff, Coordinator A mission of |
