I had an experience with an ant colony that moved from one of our fields gradually, year by year, closer to our house. When it showed up in the herb garden I tried the boiling water method with limited success. When it appeared in the peppermint and I repeated the boiling water and the colony disappeared ( I think - I haven't seen it for years now). I'd heard that peppermint was an ant deterrent, so it surprised me to see the ants appearing there at all -- but peppermint tea, in the form of the pot of boiling water, seemed to send them on their way.

I have a compost pile mainly composed of oak leaves and kitchen waste. Last fall it was 6 feet tall and 12 feet wide. It is now about flat, and I am trying to convert and manage it in three parts. One for current year, one with leaves and dirt to put over food, and one with finished compost to move to my garden beds. There is a huge population of big black ants. They do not bite, but they climb all over you. Last week I tried a pot of boiling water on them, which I plan to repeat. Any other suggestions? Thank you.
