Seems the answer for "picking buckets" is to drill a couple of holes in the
bottom or glue something in the bottom so they wouldn't stack so tight - maybe a
little block of wood or a plastic soda cap.

down, step on the handle and pull up. Nearly always work and requires no
hardware.
On my farm I make it a cardinal sin to nest buckets. That helps
eliminate a lot of problems.
