I don't know if this is a useful contribution to the subject but, I seem to
recall reading in a text ages ago that identical genotypes can manifest as
different phenotypes, given varying environmental conditions.
This would seem to imply that their is some flexibility in how the gene
expresses itself physically.

If not science, genes or DNA then what? There is no dogma in science, any
study, test, or theory can be found to be in error and changed. It is the
scientific process that is important.
