been using them for years. I use seedling flats that drain to put the blocks in than put the flats into perma-nest trays so I can bottom water. Top watering ruins the air pruning effects and can badly erode the block off of the roots.

The soil recipes in Eliot Coleman's new organic grower is a really good recipe for soil block use.

It will take a bit of learning to get the soil and water ratio just right so expect your first several flats to not be perfect but they should still grow seedlings.

Hello List:

Does anyone here use soil blocks? I am going to order block makers this
year instead of spending that money on the large quantities of plastic cell
trays I usually get. But, I was wondering if any of you have experience
with them, and if you do, what do you place the blocks in while germinating
and growing seedlings (plastic trays without - or with - drain holes, wooden
boxes...)?
Thanks!
Vivian
