- Subject: [Market-farming] growing in tires?
- Date: Thu, 6 Jan 2005 15:19:26 -0800 (PST)
I used to grow in tires many years ago, here in the NW and the biggest
advantage was the heat collection in the sun. But...I also noticed a
significant odor in the heat of the summer that was far from pleasant. I
began to wonder then just how safe the practice was and discontinued it
for floating row cover instead. There were then several articles
including Rodale on the danger of old tires and railroad ties in garden
situations. They can also be a toxic mess should they catch fire.....I
would never use them again especially as an Organic grower. Does the
Organic Rule have anything to say on the subject? Sora at
