Thank you Allan--you're correct--they are bacteria. As for the firefang, I've never seen it, but I've heard of it and I'm sure it can be a problem. --As for good info regarding all the stages in composting, anything by Elaine Ingram is sure to be good. In the past, I have relied on Clarence Golueke; he wrote a book called Composting: A Study of the Process and Its Principles in 1972 (Rodale) that was my bible for quite a few years. A fellow named Dan Dindle (Dindal, Dindel?--you can tell how long it's been since I've seen it) drew a really nice schematic of primary and secondary decomposers that I used to use in classes. I'm not sure where you can find it now, but you can try googling it.
