- Subject: [Market-farming] Wood Chip Mulch
- Date: Wed, 2 Jun 2004 07:41:02 -0400
This must have been discussed a hundred times, but I can't find it in MY archives and the problem was just thrust upon me.
A neighbor is a woodworker and just offered me a mountain of 'fresh' pine shavings. (He also has cherry, oak, walnut, etc. What about that walnut? It's not alleopathic at the chip level, is it?)
I never really use mulch, since I plant biointensively, but I've seen LOTS of splash up this season and would like to use mulch in the cut flower and herb gardens. The question: will mulch on the surface tie up nutrients in any significant fashion? Do i need to amend or block (newspaper and then chips) when I apply or is it, as Malcom Beck said recently in ACRES "All Good"?
And, what about those WALNUT chips??
Thanks -Allan
