Hi, Folks!

Somewhere in these messages, Willie asked about gourds (I am SO behind on the messages on this list -- too much planting to do! ;-))

Hardshell gourds seem to have little pest pressure and seem to be able to outgrow any weeds (although weeding or mulching is always a good idea). If you can find crafters who want them, you can keep them on racks with good air circulation and sell them forever.

The most important thing about gourds is to stop watering them at least a month before harvest so that they dry out completely.

If you want seed for next year, harvest the nicest ones and put them somewhere where the frost won't get them. If the gourds are dried properly and you don't care about the seeds being viable, you can leave them in the field, but it's a bit more risky than storing them on racks.

The Canadian Gourd Society had a GREAT website, especially if you are going to make cool things like soup and salad bowls!
