We don't fertilize after planting either. Cover crops and rotation,
composted cow manure tilled into our blessed already-lovely soil, and 6" of
mulch seem to do it just fine. Our German Red are looking great, though
we're still a ways from scapes
(zone3/4).
This is not to say that no post-planting fertiizer is a policy - I'll do it
if it ever looks necessary - it just hasn't been needed yet.
