Most full-size pickup trucks can hold a cubic yard of dirt/compost, and
that's the max unless you've got a beefed-up suspension or a heavy-duty truck
designed for bigger loads.
So 12 yards at $40 per would run you $480. $275 seems like a good deal
delivered compared to 12 truckloads you have to go get yourself. Of course
it's all relative apparently to how close there are mushroom operations to
you.
Speaking of mushroom compost, does anyone know (generally) what kind of
nutrients it provides? Seems like it would be mostly nitrogen, but I'm not
clear on that.

I'm in north central Pennsylvania - the mushroom farms are
all or mostly all in southeast Pennsylvania, as far as I
know. I'd expect that it would cost more, the farther you
are away from this area.
I can buy it from a small local greenhouse for $40
(delivered) for a full-size pick-up truck-load. How this
compares to 12 yards for $275, I don't know.
It costs considerably more than $40/pick-up load at a more
mainstream, larger local nursery, but I can't remember how
much.
When I've had it, it was black or dark-brown crumbly
compost-y looking stuff with a very, very faint compost-y
odor.
