Try Neosema locustae, a parasitic protozoa that attacks grasshoppers.
It's a lot more discriminating than the average chicken--the only things
it attacks are members of the Acrididae family (locusts, crickets,
mantids, walkingsticks), but the crickets kept chirping even after the
grasshoppers were gone, so I didn't feel like a total creep.
Most biological supply houses sell it and can give you advice about the
amounts to use and where to place it relative to your garden and
prevailing winds.
