In getting some material ready for the farmers market opening on May 1, I remembered

about this report on pesticides from last October. They even have a downloadable wallet guide.

As a matter of fact, seeing how contaminated celery was, I decided to plant lovage this year.

They say the leaves can be substituted for celery as a flavor in soups, etc.......

Lovage looks like celery but does not grow or taste like celery-it is much much stronger tasting and a perennial. It was growing on this farm when we moved here 11 years ago.

Lovage has never done well in my area as a market crop. Can't even get the local gourmet chefs to use it. They do not know what it is and are slow to try it. Personally I love the stuff but a small amount will do in most dishes. I should have useable lovage in about a week.

I will say it is a nice plant. Ours will get 5' high and they have nice yellow umbrel flowers that are very attractive to beneficial insects and aphids (though the aphids never seem to do any damage to the lovage).
