I thought of this myself, Pat, but then realized that the same "supersoil"
from the same bag produced these terrible results and later good results.
So no, i don't think the dirt is at fault.

Ideally I do want to formulate my own potting mix. Probably what Eliot
Coleman suggests. I just need a good source of compost -- namely, my own.
The compost I'm getting now from my local waste transfer station is mostly
just chopped up yard waste and only composts for 6 weeks. At $15/yard I
can't complain, but it isn't ideal for potting soil I don't think.

The more na dmore i think about it, the idea that it's the cold that got
'em makes more and more sense. Seedlings coming up now (all of March
we've been at 80F or higher during the day) are doing really well.
Seedling coming up in Jan (with highs in the 40s or 50s) are having
problems. So i think it's the cold. The soil got nice and warm becuase
the sun was out, so the roots were happy, but the air was cool so the
leaves weren't happy. Does any of that make sense????

Matt
