Maryland's tobacco auction season began this week, this year its being
held in two locations in the Hughesville area of Charles county. They
say its going to be the smallest crop in history roughly 2 million
pounds from 1500 acres. Last year the price averaged $1.48 a pound, that
works out to around $2000 an acre, not very much for all the hand work
involved. State says that 76% of all tobacco farmers have retired
their allotments of over 7 million pounds through the tobacco buyout
program. I don't regret the loss of tobacco but its sad to see the end
of a long and honorable rural tradition. Tobacco buyers from all over
the world would pay a premium for MD tobacco, something to do with ideal
soils and climate... Bob.
