Marj, I am also a NOFA member, I am in central Ma. the $410K didn't
surprise me as most anywhere in NOFA's area is pricey, but then also has a
good clientele base. I'll just agree with everyone else $41,000 is possible
I suppose but you'll need a few years of growing to know if it's possible
for you.
Hubby is a teacher and we run a small (this year about 30 member) CSA
basically by our selves. Occasionally hubby hires a student to pull weeds
etc. But we decided awhile ago to only be as big as the work we can do
alone. Help costs money and I suppose there is a point where the net is
increased but at our scale it mostly seems like cost of help eats into the
net.
Plus it takes a special person to be a farm worker and anyone goofy enough
to like it is probably already trying it as a hobby or "professionally" :).
If you can afford this dream property without the farm income go for it, but
it will be a little while before your ag business "takes root"

instincts tell me $41K would be a difficult goal to reach.

> Why can't you grow vegetables on it? Vegetables are grown commercially on
many kinds of soil under many kinds of conditions. There are pros and cons
to the relationship of certain vegetables to certain soil types. But
generally, soil type shouldn't dictate whether you can grow vegetables or
not, just how you do it.

someone who isn't long on experience. Like a previous writer said, start
small and work your way up. And stay within your means.
