Bringing It All Back Home
An Educational Series on Locally Grown Food
and Home Town Economics
People around the U.S. are rediscovering the
benefits of buying local food. It is fresher than anything in the
supermarket and that means it tastes better and is more nutritious.
Another plus is that local food is also good for your community
economy-buying directly from family farmers helps them stay in
business. Why? Because they get to keep more of your food dollar! This
means buying locally keeps your dollars circulating within the
community rather than leaving town. Come to the Shepherdstown War
Memorial Building at 7 P.M. (except as noted) on the third Wednesday
of each month to hear stimulating presentations by national leaders in
local food and local economics.
This event was organized by The Fresh and
Local CSA and Gardening for the Future of Shepherdstown,
WV.
All Events are FREE to the public. RSVP
requested for food and seating at most events.
JOEL SALATIN -Relationship Marketing -
Wednesday , January 21, 6:30 PM
Do you know who your farmer is? That's a
question you'll start asking yourself after you hear Shenandoah
Valley neighbor Joel Salatin speak on the future of food and farming.
Joel has been featured in American Heritage and Smithsonian magazines.
His presentations about ecological farming on his family's 550-acre
Virginia farm have received standing ovations nationwide. Joel is the
author of 4 books on quality farming and is considered to be
America's best known working farmer. If that's not enough, attendees
at this program will receive a meal of Joel's pastured pork sausage
and pastured hen eggs! See you there!
SALLY FALLON -Traditional Food and
Nutrition - Wednesday February 18, 7:00 PM
Ever wonder why great grandpa could suck all
the fat off his steaks, slather his toast with butter and eat eggs by
the carton and never worry about his cholesterol? It wasn't just
your imagination and Sally Fallon can explain accurately why the good
foods of just a few generations ago are harmful to us now. Of course,
It doesn't have to be that way. Sally Fallon has changed the face of
American farming. She will tell us why truly healthful foods come from
local farms and how citizens interested in high quality foods make
both themselves and their communities more healthy!
JERRY BRUNETTI -Surviving the American
Health System- March 17, 7:00 PM
Ready to ignore your doctor's advice and
start taking care of your body and responsibility for your own health?
That's what Jerry did about 3 years ago when his doctor told him
that he only had 6 months left to live unless he started chemo
immediately. Following the naturopathic dictum to maximize nutritional
intake and minimize toxic intake, Jerry has outlived his doctor's
prediction by years, is more fit and vital than before he contracted
cancer and, you guessed it, he owes it all to nutritionally dense,
locally grown, vegetable, meat and dairy products. His experiences in
healing and his insights into what wellness really is, can help you,
regardless of what ails you!
MICHAEL SHUMAN -Going Local: The High
Values of Local Economies - April 21, 7:00 PM
Ponder this statistic: only 9 cents of a food
dollar is returned to the farmer! The rest is lost outside the
community to distribution, marketing and inputs. Mr. Shuman says that
" a community ought to pursue selfreliance as far as it's
cost-effective, because it minimizes its vulnerability to events
outside its control, maximizes the local economic multiplier, pumps up
the municipal tax base, and imparts greater skills and excitement on
behalf of the citizenry. " Mr. Shuman is a periodic commentator
on NPR's "All Things Considered." Author of 6 books, his
most recent is Going Local.
THOMAS LINZEY -Regaining Local Control of
Things That Matter - May 19, 7:00 PM
Viewshed and Foodshed are two words that
represent quality of life to small communities. More and more
Shepherdstown seems to be losing a lot of both to forces outside its
control. Thomas Linzey is co-founder of the Community Environmental
Legal Defense Fund, a nonprofit law firm that provides free and
affordable legal services to community groups and local governments.
Much of the work of the Legal Defense Fund is focused on the issue of
the "corporatization" of agriculture and legal issues
surrounding attempts to directly market farm products to
consumers.
