I don't think they're difficult to raise by seed, but they're slow growing. Grow them like onions by seed and give them at least as long, preferably 10 weeks or more. They can be planted outside pretty early so I start them inside as early as late January. If your greenhouse/interior growing conditions are good you'll have strong transplants by the time the ground thaws.

Thanks to all who replied re: shallots.  Bill, how much trouble is it to grow them from seed, assuming I can get them started in late February (in CT)?  The sets seemed pretty pricey, even at bulk pricing.
