Art,

That is the point. We are renovating without the use of chemicals
especially the organo-phosphate based non-selective herbicide such as
Roundup. We were not surprised to find weed infestation in our
market-garden crops. What we were surprised is that we could mitigate the
effects by timely tillage. We did no cultivation after planting and
confirmed reduced yields against permanent, weed free plots during the
growing season. But this was of little consequence to us as we had more
than adequate yields for the labor and seed costs. The only real failure
with regard to weeds were some seed sprouted tomatoes that never ripened due
to low sunlight. The pigweed was two feet taller than the tomato plants.
Still it wasn't a failure in regard to our learning what will produce under
these circumstances.

Back on the chemical herbicide application, we see a lot of weed infestation
into the CRP lands that NRCS cost-shares the conversion to native grasses,
spraying with Roundup then no-tilling. Who says weeds are bad in pasture
though? Our livestock selectively grazes the weeds throughout the various
seasons.

Rick

Hello Rick. Correct me if I am wrong but I get the impression you are
plowing up pastureland and rotating it into vegetables for one season then
rotating the land back into pasture. What is so earth shakingly new about
that. I would burn the pasture vegetation back with Roundup before tilling,
you will be surprised with the unexpected weeds that come up from land thats
been in pasture a few years...Bob.
