I'm still scratching my head over these particular posts, the one from Betsy
that contained the post from Brigette. I'm guessing that Brigette responded
to Betsy and assumed it was going out to the whole list. I've had no unsub
notice from Brigette, so I'm assuming you're still on here, Brigette.

This thread is a classic example of the struggle to maintain this forum.
Threads that some feel are off-topic are what others would love to see a
full discussion on. Some want only farming techniques discussed, while
others want to see threads about anything and everything connected with
running their farms. And in truth, that's how this list is defined (quoted
from list faqs):

"We hope to see discussions on all sorts of issues facing small farmers.
>From seeding to appropriate scale production methods, equipment, marketing,
profitability, cropping sequences, diversification, sustainability, working
with extension agents, private consultants, and fellow farmers, and anything
else involved in making a living and providing food and fiber from your
small acreage farm."

Discussing taxes, how they relate to your farm, how you file them as a farm,
etc, is definitely on-topic. The flat tax/fair tax/general tax issues are
not (though they seemed to be leading to a great discussion!) which brings
me to something else I contemplated over the summer. (Please don't compare
me to a former list "owner" who continually threw together lists ad nauseum
; ))), but would y'all like to have an off-topic forum?? (It would simply
be marketfarming_OT, and moderated only to the extent to keep out viruses
and spam. Anything and everything could be freely discussed.) I know you
don't want to join one more list--I don't either--but it would provide a
solution for those who want a pure list and those who enjoy great
conversations with like-minded individuals. Many of us have been on this
list since it's inception, and we've come to respect those who are
articulate conversationalists and thoughtful debaters. With winter coming o
n, bad weather to keep us indoors, now's the time that "community" comes
into play on this list. Meeting that need, without stepping on the toes of
others is a fine line.

Let me know what y'all think!!
