Hi Del,
I suggest lemon grass. It is easy to grow and will have the spikiness that you desire in a planter. If you run out of the regular spikes (or even if you want to forget them and just do LG) run to a local Asian market and buy the lemon grass they have for sale in the produce section. They are very easy to root and transplant like a charm after a few weeks. Might want to see if the Asian market will give you a deal on them if you buy in bulk. But, still genreally cheap, about 30 cents a plant..similar to a plug bought in.
