Subject: [Market-farming] Black Walnuts

Walnuts are in the news as being a great alternative to fish for omega 3 fatty acids.  I am rich in black walnut trees in my area.  I have often thought of harvesting these, but have found little on the internet on machinary to remove the green husk, break the walnut and remove the nut meat.  Most of you are probably aware of how difficult it is to break the shell on a black walnut.  My method has always been a hammer on a cinder block, but this has been just for my own use.  What commercial methods exist to help with such an enterprise?

The FDA is to allow walnut growers to use a health claim stating that 'supportive but not conclusive' research shows that omega-3 rich walnuts may help reduce risk of heart disease....
