Three questions, 3 answers from my pea patch.
1.  Before those peas get too big for either use, pick a few and bite into them.  The pods of the sugar snaps are sweet, crisp, and tender.   You will want to keep eating them!  The pods of the peas that are for shelling are not sweet and tender.  You will probably want to spit out the fiber after chewing on them for awhile.
2.  There is a slight visual difference, but it will probably take the experience of picking a lot of peas and a sharp eye to see it.  If I had to try to describe it, I would say the sugar snaps are more rounded on the end.
3.  Pea pods (sugar snaps and snow peas) can be frozen.  The Extension service should have a bulletin on freezing vegetables.  If not, I would try the same method used for green beans:  blanch breifly in boiling water, then cool in cold water, drain, bag up in freezer bags, and put in freezer.  The peas that you eat shelled do fine if shelled before freezing.  They never taste as good as fresh, though.

how can I tell which set of peas are for pea pods, and which are for letting grow into peas for freezing.

Is there any visible way to tell the two apart now that its time to pick the pods?

Also curious, is there any way to preserve pea pods for post-season use?  Can they be frozen?

Thanks!
