HI MARIE,
RE THE QUESTION ABOUT GUINEAS FOR PEST CONTROL, ESP HOPPERS: LAST YEAR WE HAD ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEM WITH FOWL EATING THE VEGGIES. THIS SPRING, THEY DID QUITE A BIT OF NIBBLING ON THE FRESHLY SET PLANTS. THEY CAN FLY, SO WE CAN'T JUST SHUT THE GATE. WE MADE DO AND REPLACED SOME PLANTS. NEXT YEAR, WE PLAN TO 1) SET THE CAGES IMMEDIATELY AND 2) WRAP THE CAGES WITH PLASTIC PALLET WRAP, WHICH WILL ALSO GIVE SOME WIND PROTECTION.
IF THEY EAT A FEW TOMATOES THIS YEAR, WE WILL JUST PLANT MORE NEXT YEAR. IF THE TOMATO IS RIPE WITH A BITE OUT, THAT WILL BE A GOOD ONE TO MAKE INTO TOMATO SAUCE, WON'T IT?
SURE DO ENVY THOSE STRAWBERRIES! WE TRIED THEM, BUT IT WAS TOO MUCH OF A STRUGGLE - TOO HOT AND DRY HERE.
