That was my attitude. A until a few years ago. When we moved to this
location about 25 years ago there were no deer. The area was just
developing as a commuter area. I guess the long time locals had killed
off all the deer. Rumor is that our state wildlife agency stocked
deer about ten miles from us. Anyway, for about twenty years the deer
population has been building. I've not been sure exactly what my
losses have been, but last year I had an eye-opening experience: none
of my southern pea fields produced much, but I had one that was
outstanding. Beautiful peas, weed free, well watered, well fertilized.
About one acre should have produced between $2K and $4K worth of peas;
maybe more. I harvested NOT A SINGLE PEA. Due to deer depredation.

I've gotten and considered several promising deer control suggestions
from this list. Thanks to all. I've decided to have about 8000' of
electric fence built. Remind me in six months and I'll tell you how it
worked out.

BTW, the electric fence is supposed to also exclude coyotes, which are a
problem here on watermelon.

Most to all of my deer damage is done at night.

Coyotes and watermelon? Do they eat the melons themselves? I am picturing
a coyote attempting to scratch open a watermelon - how do they do it?
