Theres much that could be said but I'll just emphasize what I think is the
most important issue for quality - water. Onions have short root systems. They
take a long time to develop bulbs. There are many opportunities for those short
root systems to run out of water. They don't show it much until the end of the
season when all you have are small bulbs. They need a fresh infusion of about
0.5" water every 3-4 days, more in really hot weather. Plant early. They are
hardy and benefit from an early start on developing their roots. You can
direct-seed them but the same rule applies - lotsa water. Also, don't let the
weeds get ahead of you, especially grasses. Onions are NOT competitive.
