Rick W.

I get dozens of calls each week from people around the U.S. looking for farm
raised products. This is due to high exposure from the many organizations I
am involved with and the networking I do. If I have subscribers on the
Homestead Foods project I will give them first dibs on any referrals. I
would rather have local producers to route buyers to than to ship meat.

Some states have a food tax, some do not.

The checkoff must by law be reported/paid monthly, at least in Missouri.
Even if you do not have any animals harvested in a given month, a report
must be filed. Contact your state agency that administers the checkoff for
details. The penalties for not paying are retroactive and are on a per head
basis. "Persons in non-compliance with the Act and Order are subject to a
civil penalty of up to $5,500 per transaction, plus un-remitted checkoff
dollars and interest."

It is my hope that the checkoff will remain in place. I have been working
to gain access to a portion of that money for the grass fed sector. It will
take much effort to get the USDA and the NCBA to recognize the grass fed
sector as more than a niche market. If I had a good attorney (no slanders
here - there are some good attorneys) that was willing to work with me, I
could gain some ground in Missouri. I have pointed out some very gray areas
in the spending of checkoff monies that has been their argument for saying
that the monies cannot be spent to benefit a portion of the industry, but
must be used for the entire industry. It is a long story.

We have not found that internet listings are a help in marketing here at
Misty Ridge Farm. Maybe if you were near a very large market? We are listed
on what I consider to be one of the "big" internet natural/alternative foods
web sites but have not to our knowledge, ever received as much as one
customer in the past year of being listed. Needless to say, we would not
list with anything that did not give us a return on the cost.

inspection. If the purchase is made in the state, i.e. a form of payment
made and the appropriate sales tax paid (you do pay sales tax, right?), then
a second transaction can be made for the transportation costs.

========
I am not sure why you refer to sales tax? There is certainly no sales tax on
food in Wisconsin. That would be about the most regressive tax on earth.

>>>>>Another reminder is that you are also obligated to pay the beef
checkoff funds on animals you slaughter.

==========
Do you pay it on a quarterly or annual basis?

Also, do you think that the U.S. Supreme Court will uphold the pork and beef
checkoffs?

Sincerely,

Rick Williams
