My husband and I began farming full time about 10 years ago (in our late 40's), leaving our former careers.  Farming involves so many varied skills, that one of the biggest benefits of a mid-life change is the multitude of experiences you can bring to the farm.  We had a lifetime of part-time farming, so it was not totally new to us, but having to make a living at something that was previously a hobby is very challenging.  My energy level and strength is not that of a twenty year old, but after working with our interns the last five years, I see that my ability to focus and complete a task well is much greater than most of the younger folks...I'm kind of  like the "Everready Bunny",...I just keep going and going and going.
I would advise you to find a farmer mentor.  In our area (northern NY state), we actually have an established mentor program to help folks get started.  Learn as much as you can and don't take on too much at once.  Begin small, and grow along with your successes!  Good Luck!!
