Vegetable growers in this region often plant grain rye
in the Fall and till out sections in the Spring, leaving 5' strips of rye every
25-30' to serve as windbreaks. This is most prevalent in sandy soils as the
blowing sand in the Spring can blast young vegetable plants. Also, the strips
often create a slightly warmer environment around the young plants.
