What is the proper way to deal with them?
Feed them to the pigs. They seem happy crunching the husks and shells.
Several years we handed out black walnut nuts (we put the husks on the driveway and run over them a few times and then a day or two later pick up the nuts) to our CSA subscribers. They didn't really know what to do with them and the meat, atleast the nuts from our 20 or so trees, is rather scant per nut. And it really does take a hammer or a rock to break the shell.
