When I was a kid, we picked up nuts most falls - mostly hickory (better than
pecans!) and walnuts. to husk the walnuts on a small scale, pile them in
the wheel tracks of a gravel driveway, and drive a vehicle back and forth
over them. Then, let dry a few hours and pick the nuts up out of the
crushed hulls. Remember to wear gloves. Once, in my early teens, I didn't
and had to wear long white gloves to a dance the following weekend! Walnut
hulls are a very strong, and on fabric, permanent dye. One of the best wool
dyes even without a mordant. So, if you are into spinning, after the husks
dry, save them in a paper bag for dyeing purposes.
