We have hens and fryers and run the birds on fallowed ground planted in
clover the fall before we will graze them there. This is a part of our
rotation. You have to keep the birds fenced in or they will destroy your
garden quickly. We also have a coop for the hens to sleep and lay in and
clean that out 3 to 4 times a year and make compost with the manure and
garden leavings.

The birds out in the garden areas are housed in chicken tractors that we
can move around the fallowed areas. Most of our layers, though are on a
more permanent chicken with the coop and thus not out on fallowed garden
areas most of the time-we do put about 15 to 20 hens out on these areas
most of the time with any meat babies. They teach the babies how to be
chickens.
Hybrid rock crosses are not terribly effective at tilling and weed
control but they will add an amazing amount of manure to the area. Non
hybrids birds will not add all that much manure but will work the soil better.
