We pot the first ones up when we think they'll be safe outside. 'Course, we
don't usually have frost on May 18th like we did last week (normal is about
April 20-23, although last frost date is May 5th or so). It caused us to
move them all inside for the night. Ours are all budded, though, and we
didn't want to take a chance. We pot up about the middle of April, figuring
by the time the foliage breaks the surface, we're safe. Most years that
works! Inside a greenhouse structure, the plants stretch too much, giving a
really tall, and not very strong stem, necessitating staking, another cost
and more labor. Also, they'll bloom earlier than they would outside, and
that might disappoint the customer next year, when they bloom in June, not
in May like when it was purchased. And, we always have more space outside.
