I have done this with the cultivar Cynthiana which is difficult to root from cuttings.  It works well.  Just bury a section of the cane about six inches deep, or enough to anchor it.  If it is long enough, the end can be trained up on the trellis.  After it roots it can be separated from the mother plant.  This is usually done when pruning the following winter.
