Hello all
I joined the list last week. I live in Durham NC.
In searching out a "better way" to live, and since my soul feels so peaceful when I work the soil, I plan to do more of it. Income will be welcome but not depended on. Plan to teach for 12 more years.
I live on 4 1/2 acres. Have calculated approx. 1 1/2 acres can be farmed(1/4 at this time). I have a steady supply of horse manure, a Troy Bilt Horse, use of the neighbors farm tractor, and three small barns. I am surrounded by middle to upper income housing. A very high-tech area.
My first dilemma, how much to accomplish the first year. I want to do a mix of veggies, herbs and cut flowers. I am experienced with veggies but not flowers.
A big challenge at this time is how to get organized with planting layout and scheduling. I would like to advertise an exclusive(5-10 customers) small pick-your-own to near-by upper-income families for this, my first year.
Wish I already had things growing under lights, but this weekend I plan to get seeds down. [I live in NC(7A)]. Have plotted out and labeled beds and will take soil samples this weekend, which will be sent to NC Soils Lab.
I am doing a lot of reading, plan to join a few organizations, visit local markets and farms etc.....
Please feel free to comment on this "under construction" web site. It shows where I am headed, I think.

Sorry if I rambled.......so much to think about and decisions to make.......may this always be a joy more than a "job".
