Marj,
A know a guy who went to Kosovo as part of an international civilian police
force sent there after the recent war. After he returned home 16 months
later, Doug told me that while he was over there he discovered that he could
get by without many of the contemporary conveniences most of us are used to
(electricity, running water, gas heat, etc.) and that he didn't find it too
hard to adjust.
My observation here is that Doug didn't even grow up in those conditions and
yet he seemingly was able to adjust to them without too much difficulty.
