Hi All,
I'd like to put my 2cents in also although I'm
not farming yet either, I'll tell you how I feel from
my consumer's view point. Life is busy with a lot of
things we "should" be doing. We've heard over the
years that eggs aren't good for us, now that's been
reversed in ads, that butter isn't good for us, that
red meat isn't good for us, that the fish in lakes,
streams and the oceans have high levels of toxic
substances and they aren't good for us. I'm concerned
about pesticides on fruits and vegetables. I don't
want hormones and antibiotics in meat or milk I
consume. I don't know what's safe to eat, LOL. I'm
in the habit of cooking the way I've always cooked.
We don't eat a certain thing on a certain day of the
week but we do eat a lot of the same thing. We do eat
fast food more than we should because of all the
"things" we "should" be doing. We eat out of habit.
What I have discovered is that I'm going to have
to make a major effort to change my eating habits and
we all know how hard it is to make lifestyle changes.
I'm going to have to find new ways of cooking and
prehaps cook with foods that are new to me. This is
going to require that I spend a lot of time
researching and trying new recipes. I've recently
started watching the Food Network. I must say that
I've been impressed with the overall healthiness of
the foods prepared, the generous use of fresh herbs
and mostly with the ease of a lot of the dishes as far
as preparing. A couple of my favorite shows are The
Naked Chef and Bobby Flay. A few weeks ago, for the
first time in my life, I cooked salmon, very tasty:-)
I also find that while some of Martha's recipes are
complicated that she always stresses quality and
suggests growing your own gardens, chickens and so
forth.
How can you help and increase your customers?
You've talked about it before, Education!!! Yes it
takes extra time and you may feel that they should do
it themselves, but...with so much to do... I want big
signs saying pesticide free, I want recipes and if at
all possible, some samples of those recipes. Maybe
package veggies together that will make a certain
recipe that you're handing out that week. How about
some sample menus using what's available fresh. Or at
least some web addresses or books where I can find the
info.
Below is a program you may want to make time to
listen to. The guest starts at the second hour of the
show. I heard only the first hour and a half last
night but will listen to all the show in the next day
or two. What I heard concerned the use of infant
formula and baby food, and why we should stay away
from them. I think it's a program that a lot of you
would enjoy listening to. I don't have young children
at home anymore but I do have two grandchildren, 1 and
3. My plan is to make healthy meals and invite the
family over, and as they leave, give them the recipes.
Even if it takes a few years before I have to quanity
to go to our farmer's market, I can at least make sure
that my extended family has fresh, in season produce
to eat. Maybe we can change one family at a time.
Susan
