I can attest to how much squirrels love sunflowers. Once, I had one
growing in the front yard of our urban townhouse in the Washington DC
area. Looked out the window one day to see a squirrel SITTING ON TOP
of the seed head, munching away! That was one very big plant with a
2" thick stem and a flower the size of a large dinner plate.
