WIND ENERGY,
a clean and renewable source of
electric power, is also the
world's fastest growing energy source.

Since 1974 the
American Wind Energy Association (AWEA)
has advocated the development of
wind energy as a reliable, environmentally superior energy alternative in the
United States and around the world.

WIND
POWER 2001 Overview

Every five years the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) hosts its annual
meeting in Washington, DC, in order to give wind industry members the
opportunity to educate federal lawmakers about the reality of wind-generated
electricity and to lobby for legislation that will encourage the growth of
the industry. This year, instead of three full days of sessions, AWEA sets
aside two afternoons for visits to Capitol Hill and adds one additional day.
The table gives an overview of the week.

Pre-
Conference Seminars
Sunday, June 3, 2001
9:00 am – 4:00 pm

Wind Energy Engineering – An Overview
This short course will focus on the engineering basis of modern horizontal
axis wind turbines used for generating electric power. Applications that will
be discussed range from hybrid power systems to wind farms. The primary
emphasis will be why wind turbines are designed the way they are.

Workshop topics include: 1) An introduction; 2) design drivers and
constraints (wind resource, environmental issues, and economics); 3)
fundamentals (aerodynamics, mechanics and dynamics, electrical aspects and
controls); 4) the wind turbine itself (design conditions and standards,
design issues and options); 5) system integration; 6) design codes; and 7)
additional wind engineering resources.

Presenters: James Manwell, Jon McGowan and Tony Rogers Renewable Energy
Laboratory, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Massachusetts

Fundamentals of Wind Energy Workshop
This non-technical seminar will focus on the wind industry as a whole
featuring the following topics.

Overview of Wind Energy Markets Worldwide
Technology Overview – Utility-Scale
Technology Overview – Small Systems
Wind Potential and Resource Assessment
Siting a Wind Project
Financing a Wind Project
Operations/Managing a Wind Farm
